Digipaks

What is a Digipak?

Digipak is a patented style of compact disc or DVD packaging, and is a registered trademark or AGI Media, a MeadWestVaco, Inc. resource.
Digipaks is a gate fold (book style) paperboard or card stock outer binding. They typically have one or more plastic trays to hold a CD to the inside.

Scissor Sisters

On the CD cover as the audience we see this clear contrast been the two images that interlink from the urban setting to the country one. In the center we see a lady in white walking from what looks like a forest into a city. Her back is turned, so it is not facing the audience. This gives the sense that we had simply following her lead to this mysterious place. The use of white could show her innocence, her kindness and purity relating to the natural environment she came from. The use of colour is bright, bold, and beautiful; it is almost nature but vibrant--abstract like. The colour green has connotes nature, environment and earth

The city at the back drop shows a typical New York style landscape the high top buildings and the bright lights and busy road but they still remain to keep the framing of the lady clear--shows importance. The hole the separates the city to the forest is almost like a keyhole, were you see small details of what’s it like on the other side. This almost lead me into think of the message the band wants to represent to their fans--Is there music the key to a better life?

In contrast with the back of the album there it is only grey and white, very dull and uninteresting almost the foundations to the urban environment. It features the bands tracks and the logo above it--which is seemed in any different types of places around the Digipak. For example on the actual CD itself it represents there name and sticks into the audience head to help make it an iconic image.

Katy Perry

Throughout the digipak you can see the common theme of 'candy'. This can be seen by the CD designs being a donut and swirly like a candy cane and the images of Katy laying on a candy floss cloud. In the top image you can also see her wearing a crown of sweets. On the track listing some of the letters have been replaced with sweets and this keeps in with the theme of the digipak.

This represents Katy as having a sweet personality and also represents her as being quite innocent; however the fact that she is naked on the front cover contradicts this. The digipak ties in with the genre of music as it relates to her style of music and also gives the audience the idea that her music is not serious and is more on the fun side.

The digipak appeals to a wide audience, the colours are mostly pinks and blues which is quite girly and the theme is also more targeted at females and this theme and colouring could appeal to a younger audience. The fact that she is naked on the front cover could appeal to males as it is quite provocative. The red colours on the digipak not only tie in with the theme but also could represent seductiveness and passion.
The iconography represents the overall image of Katy Perry as it ties in with her video for 'California girls' which has the same theme. This will make it more appealing to fans of her who feel that they have a sense of shared knowledge and it also shows how the candy/wonderland theme may be becoming a signature of hers.
