Music advertisements

Ellie Goulding’s music advertisement overall is one of the most popular layouts. The artist being included is really popular. The image takes up a considerable amount of space on the ad.
Lots of editing has been used, you can see that editors have darkened the bottom of the ad so the text would show, against in contrast of colours, and the glitter running through her hair has been added, which is a good effective as it relates to the text and colouring. The gold colour of the advertisement most properly links and indicates her name ‘Goulding’.
The text is done very cleverly. The album name is called ‘Lights’ and the text is done and appears like lights glowing, in which is very successful towards the ad for appealing and withdrawing the audience.

This music advertisement is from a indie/rock genre band called Kasabian it features the typical conventions of a advert--quotes from reviewers along with a star rating, this creates interest to the audience to wonder why the album is so good? We see a released date of the new album 28h of August along with information about a limited edition CD/DVD pack. A real attraction for kasabian fans and would spark interest and conversation. The image we see has a religious feel partnered with the King of clubs play card in the corner give us a sense of power. The annonations of the King of Club card is that he is the top of the pack, bold and power. The almost painted image we see is of a king/soilder with a ribbon tried at the botton reading "Empire" we believe this is the tittle of there new album. Ths image is almost the exact visal representation we think of when you hear the word empire. The strong man image of  warrior carrying a helpless naked woman makes us believe he is the king. It makes the audience believe that this isnt just another album by them its the, new album, its important, its bold and powerful. I like the contrast with the font of the word "Kasabian" and the image thats behind it which is typically soft, oil painting. The title is harsh, bold and black matching the king of clubs feature, I think is is a very affective advertisement, its creative and bold and orginal. That represents there band well.

Intertextuality

This the process where one media text takes the idea/s from another existing text-it may be a carbon copy, or a homage for example a music video may borrow elements from a well-known film or a piece of Art it can come from anything. This idea of borrowing of images, narrative, etc and remaking them can be seem as post-modern.Robbie Williams let me entertain you inspired by the 1970s rock band Kiss, with the use of the bold, white and black make up and tight catsuit costume. We also see the behaviour by the singer has the feel of being a "Rock Star" creating that bad boy image to the world. Thinking about the history before the video we know Robbie was part of a boy band called Take That this is almost a statement to the world, that he is a man and is going to take the music industry by storm. The video plays to the conventional image me imagen a Rockstar to be like--crazy, daring and badly behaved. Inspiration took from artists like Alice Cooper.
Madonna Material Girl video did a carbon copy of a scene from a Marilyn Monroe film. It was taken from the film Gentleman Prefers Blondes. As we know Marilyn Monroe was a huge popular actress/singer in the 1950s around the world, men and woman alike loved her for her talent and pretty looks. She starred in many iconic films around the time, that are still continuely watched and known today. So it is not wonder that Madonna wanted a similar sense in her video. We see in this particular video that it uses a similar set and costumes for the singer and her male dancers to the copy. For example the way Madonna decided to style is almost an exact visal copy of Monroes creating familarly to the audience, they recognise it and like it. I think the reasons why Madonna chose this idea was to create same iconic reference to her name. She wanted to almost be the next Marilyn Monroe  and pay homage to her as a performer. I think there is a true respect and love for her when recreating this copy--its been done well and thoughtout.

Shania Twain Man I feel Like A Woman 1999 This music video has taken inspiration from a previous music video of Rober Palmer Addicted To Love. The noticalble intertextuality I can see is the set up on the band, where we can see a number of member playing the instruments. The video featured Palmer singing in front of a "band" of beautiful women who looked exactly alike. They wore lots of make-up and identical clothing as they pretended to play the instruments. The video became an icon of the '80s, and is constantly parodied, including in a Pepsi commercial with Britney Spears.

Red Hot Chilli Peppers Californication 2005 I think is inspired by the video gaming industry, due to the ever growing amount of games, money and time spent on this market it has become a bigger part of peoples lifes. I think this growing influence the vitual world has had on the real world is huge as a result it inspired bands/singer to take homeage to it in particular the Red Hot Chilli Pepper and Robbie Williams with Let love me your energy. After looking at the video there seems to have reference to the computer game SIMs and the console game GTA. Evidence of this is the graphics we see on screen which have a real/animated feel. We see a animated man running stand away whether or not you have played GTA it looks familar--people like familar. This must have been an extremly expensive music video to produce, as we see a full 3 minutes worth of high quality graphics that are the latest technlogy available. But it does make it eye catching for the audience and it has the repeatablity--which is what the artist wants, to help make the song popular.

Music Video Conventions

http://prezi.com/ji7taedsfjud/conventions-of-music-video/
Conventions

Camera-Music videos often tend to include many long shots, close ups and mid shots this tend to be popular across a range of music genres. This helps create emphasis on the artist-whos is mostly in the centre of screen, main focus. It also forces the audience to take notice of the location and emotion taking place in the video. The close ups are used not only to show emotion but to reflect the words abd neaning od the song with the movement of the lips of the singer. This all help to create a video the connects with the fans and becomes popular.
Camera movement is oten used to follow or trace the singer, for example the titlts, pans, tracking and crane shots.

Mise-en-scene This is the stuff and arrangement of props and performance in the video. It puts importance on the representation of something, an example of this is Mad by Nero. The video involves him walking alone, being in a room alone. This sends a massage to the audience of isolation and sadness/lost. This is helped by the costume he is wearing dark clothes represent depression, wanting to almost be a shadow in the world-unoticed The lighting has a similar theme, this is just a few examples of mise-en-scene in a music video.

Editing Jump cuts are very popular in music videos. This is because it allows the editor to sudeenly change the pace of the video in time with the music-to the beat. Other tansitions like a fade and disolves are sometimes used--dream affect.

Lighting-is hugely important in a video, it picks out what the audience sees and doesnt. The use of black and white light emphasises or shadows a scene. Artficial lighting is often used to enhance the look of the artistshowing that they are the amin focus of the video.

Sound- Is mainly the artists song, but in the case of Lady Gagas video Telephone there is dialogue that tells a story before and after the song. This almost creates a short film instead of a music video. Not very often used--only by world fanous artists.

Conventions of Digipaks

The typical conventions of a Digipak would include;
A picture of the artist on the top cover of the pack along with there name or the bands name
They would also feature the name of there album
To be made from paper/card
Plastic teeth to hold the CD in place
The colour theme is sterotypically simple and used throughout the ablum campaign
They use a symbolic object, pictures that loink to the artist or the video and give the audience a slight hint and spark interest.

Advances of a Digipak
they tend to be more restistent, to be broken or cracked. Known as shatter proof
Becuasee of the material they are made from they tend to be more environmently friendly--through the use of paper instead of man made plastic. This making it hard to
Through the design of a digipak this means the artist can be a lot more creative in the layout and truely express the message/mood the musican want the audience to create, this builds a greater understanding of who the artist is and relationship with the fans.
A digipak can offen be cheaper to produce, but only an a big scale, small bands wouldn't be able/afford to made thsi and instead op for the basic CD album root.
I think that a digipak is more aesthetical pleasing than a standard CD pack, the inovative design that can be created, I think the more room for display makes it a far more excitting and enagging product to have and look at.

Disadvantages of a Digipak
Due to the paper material that is used for the digipak instead of plastic, can cause it to become prone to riping and tearing after few use. Although it is enviornmently friendly it is not as hard waering as the plastic CD packs tend to be.
To buy a digipak pack from a shop it does cost more, this is due to the added features that you don't normally have on a standard pack it included maybe an extra CD two instead of one, more photos offen posters of the band. It tends to be a more quality item, as a result the price increases.
If the plastic teeth that hold the CD in place break/snap can cause the CD to fall out, not ideal for a CD case. Overall not allowing it to achieves it basic and main funtion.

History of Music Videos

Bob Dylan Subterranean Homesick Blues
Known as the first music video ever, it is a simple 2.18 minute long production that doesn't stick to any of the main typical conventions we see today. We see the artist Bob dylan to the side of the mid-shot, holding a series of cards with the lyrics written on, he puts the cards in order to the song. So when we hear the song lyrics we see them too. A simple idea that worked well.
The key ideas that led the increase of the music promo were TV music programmes such as 'Top of the Pops' this was shown on TV every week and would show performance from chart based music with with either live or mimed performances, short films were used to fill band absences, this is what started the music promo and from there is grew to billion dollor industry.

Michael Jackson Thriller 1984

The full music video lasted an epic 14 minutes and is high regarded to many that it is the greatest music video of all time due to the exciting revolution it give to the industry.

Although in many ways it isn’t a convention music video it does still stick to typical elements they you would expect to see for example the clear relationship between the lyrics and the visuals in the video. Even just looking at the name of the song you can instantly see and know the genre is pop/horror as a result they expect those types of elements in the promo. Especially in this video the visuals and lyrics play an important part in making it unique and different. We see the use of close ups of the lead singer which is a popular convention of most music videos. But there is another reason not just to highlight the pop star instead it makes it easy for the audience to see the visual change in his appearance which is relevant in the lyrics. (From a human being to a zombie) The use of long shots are almost used in a similar way to a movie, it almost has a similar feel--the shots are designed to give the audience a wider picture, to see the mise-en-scene used. This helps to set the gothic horror scene for the audience.
Narrative plays a huge part in the music video right from the start we are shown two main characters, in a setting that features gothic, horror elements. The use of backing dancers adds depth and features the iconic routine of Michael Jackson. It is interesting to see there is a clear link between him and his routines throughout all his music videos

Queen Bohemian Rhapsoy 1975

One if that the most influential music video of its time it truly changed the way we see music video and how they are produced. With a total of 6:07 it was very long at the time of history--not sticking to the traditional 3 and half minute long this was different. As a result it broke expectations.

The first shot we see is a mid-shot of all four band mates in near darkness with a single vertical light the shines slightly over their faces to reveal a small amount of them. Allowing the audience to just make out which band member is who but still maintaining a sense of mystery and hiddenness to the video. It is interesting to think about, because it shows that they weren’t famous or didn’t see themselves as famous because of their looks. In contrast to popular music video out now the band is in every single shot. The editing of the video uses cross-fades in particular a close up of Freddie Mercury, this continues the mysterious theme as we can’t properly see his eyes--almost making it unnerving to the audience. Technically this was new to the time so the use of it was very significant. Through this editing technique it allowed the audience to see who the lead singer is and is still used in today’s music videos. Proving it is very much ahead of its time, is still used as inspiration to today’s artists. The use of live footage of the band play there instruments, it gives the impression that they are real musicians and that you’re almost are a Queen concert. Again this is another typical convention that is used by today’s music videos. This convention can almost work in the band favor and intrige the audience to want to go to their concert or not want to see the artist performance. A brave move but worked extremely well within the music video. The use of close ups ealling give a real sense of the passion in the eyes of Freddie Mercury and he is the creative mind behind the band. It is interesting to consider that he is not the prettiest artist but it wasn’t about that-it was about the music in contract to today’s society where image is extremely important and sometimes take over the music.

Britney Spears Baby one for time 2000s
Baby One More Time was among the best-selling albums of 1999; the single sold 500,000 copies on its release day and is to this date one of the most successful songs ever released by a teenager.
This song signaled the rise of the pop princess. It’s been so often parodied.  It was pure pop drivel, but it was perfectly marketed and served its purpose well.
This iconic 90s music video emphasis fashion trends through the outfits we see the lead singer in, crop tops, jogging bottoms, short skirt and knee high sock. This gives me the impression that this music video is very commercial driven and the music isn’t the main focus to the artist or the potential fans that might me watching. This creates contrast with the Queen’s music video where the main feature is Mercury’s voice not on looks. This shows the development that the music industry has been through in particular were music videos are concerned.  The whole promo seems glamourized and fake, the use backing dancers and cut away of images of hot boys make a truly stereotypical pop video. The use of close up of the lead singer give the impression she is the star and the audiences main focus the attention is on her. This is a very typical convention used continually throughout the years of music video making and will carry on to the future—especially in the pop gene as it is very image driven. The setting of a school is something that most people can relate to, she is playing the role of the “popular girl” which allows the audience to dream to be like, and they believe they want to be her. This is a key example of playing to all the cliché pop stereotypes. To reinforce this theme we see a shot of Britney running with everyone following her also giving the impression she is desired and wanted. Looking over recent music video we learn that this is a very convention pop video the use of backing dancers, extreme close ups of the lead singer, the use of glamourizing reality a huge contrast with the early Beatles and Queen. This not only shows the development in the music video but how people’s attitude and how society changed our deception of what a musician should be like. It interesting to think that the way music is represented today would the Beatles and Bob Dylan still appeal to the audience

Digipaks

What is a Digipak?

Digipak is a patented style of compact disc or DVD packaging, and is a registered trademark or AGI Media, a MeadWestVaco, Inc. resource.
Digipaks is a gate fold (book style) paperboard or card stock outer binding. They typically have one or more plastic trays to hold a CD to the inside.

Scissor Sisters

On the CD cover as the audience we see this clear contrast been the two images that interlink from the urban setting to the country one. In the center we see a lady in white walking from what looks like a forest into a city. Her back is turned, so it is not facing the audience. This gives the sense that we had simply following her lead to this mysterious place. The use of white could show her innocence, her kindness and purity relating to the natural environment she came from. The use of colour is bright, bold, and beautiful; it is almost nature but vibrant--abstract like. The colour green has connotes nature, environment and earth

The city at the back drop shows a typical New York style landscape the high top buildings and the bright lights and busy road but they still remain to keep the framing of the lady clear--shows importance. The hole the separates the city to the forest is almost like a keyhole, were you see small details of what’s it like on the other side. This almost lead me into think of the message the band wants to represent to their fans--Is there music the key to a better life?

In contrast with the back of the album there it is only grey and white, very dull and uninteresting almost the foundations to the urban environment. It features the bands tracks and the logo above it--which is seemed in any different types of places around the Digipak. For example on the actual CD itself it represents there name and sticks into the audience head to help make it an iconic image.

Katy Perry

Throughout the digipak you can see the common theme of 'candy'. This can be seen by the CD designs being a donut and swirly like a candy cane and the images of Katy laying on a candy floss cloud. In the top image you can also see her wearing a crown of sweets. On the track listing some of the letters have been replaced with sweets and this keeps in with the theme of the digipak.

This represents Katy as having a sweet personality and also represents her as being quite innocent; however the fact that she is naked on the front cover contradicts this. The digipak ties in with the genre of music as it relates to her style of music and also gives the audience the idea that her music is not serious and is more on the fun side.

The digipak appeals to a wide audience, the colours are mostly pinks and blues which is quite girly and the theme is also more targeted at females and this theme and colouring could appeal to a younger audience. The fact that she is naked on the front cover could appeal to males as it is quite provocative. The red colours on the digipak not only tie in with the theme but also could represent seductiveness and passion.
The iconography represents the overall image of Katy Perry as it ties in with her video for 'California girls' which has the same theme. This will make it more appealing to fans of her who feel that they have a sense of shared knowledge and it also shows how the candy/wonderland theme may be becoming a signature of hers.

MTV History

MTV formerly called Music Television was launched on August 1, 1981. The purpose of the channel was to play music videos. Mike Nesmith a former member of the Monkees attention had turned to the music video format created a similar TV series called Popclips, this turned out to be the inspiration for MTV.

MTV introduced new UK bands to the USA, really helping their career and get global success, this was a huge platform for artists and became to be the place to get your video played. As a result it grew rapidly in America targeting young people-white, rock acts very maintain

In the first years of MTV there was very few black artists that had there video played on the channel, for example the globally famous Michael Jackson at the time only had limited air time. This cause outcry too many fans and demanded change. They finally struggled to “Break the colour barrier” The CBS Records President Walter Yernikoff announced to take way MTV’s ability to play any of the records songs on the channel, this resulted in action and soon Michael Jackson Billy Jean was regularly played. This helped create a partnership between the channel and black artists. This music video not only broke the race barrier but in turn changed the genre MTV was from pop/rock to more of an RNB feel. This caused more artists like Prince and Janet Jackson to have air time.

The main aim of the channel originally was to play music videos 24/7 by the VJ’s but this disappeared in 2000s but still maintain eight hours of music play a day. The explanation of the channel resulted in bring out 4 in total MTV channels in the UK, this means in total they play 23 hours of videos a day. But due to the technology available today through the use of the internet they have turned their focus to TV series and creating reality programmes. They are trying to change to the social environment around them, but still remaining popular to there fans.

Media Words

Illustration this is when a music promo illustrates exactly what is being said in the song. They take the lyrics and work with all of them

Amplification- When a video just takes one key idea/theme from the song. This could just be one like of the lyrics and showing it in the music promo. An example of this is Coldplays “Scientist” where they use the line “Take me back to the start” for the theme of the music video

Disjuncture-This is the complete opposite to Illustration when an artist decides to Ignore the song’s meaning or concept completely. So they create a music video that’s completely different, unrelated to show the song. This can often be designed to confuse the audience. (not typical)

Intertextuality- When an artist takes an/few ideas from an exsisting text and showing it in the music promo. e.g. Robbie Williams in 'Let me entertain you' has make-up like the band Kiss
